At 18 years old, English songwriter Will Joseph Cook has some pretty impressive achievements to put on his college resume. Since dropping his debut EP, You Jump I Run, earlier this year, he’s topped the Hype Machine charts, received over one million plays on Spotify, and played at this year’s Glastonbury. It’s a bit more badass than buying cigarettes and a Lotto ticket for the first time. Now, he’s keeping the momentum going with his sophomore EP, Proof Enough, out August 11th via Atlantic Records.
We’ve already heard his pop prowess with “Beach”, and now he’s extending that vision with his new song, “Minute of Your Time”. As Cook himself explains it, the track originated from the You Jump I Run sessions, but he held it back until it found a better home, which happened to be Proof Enough. “The song is about the mental torment of a linear lifestyle,” Cook explains to Consequence of Sound. “I thought that the boundaries of a call centre said this best with an employee who can only express themselves through predetermined and/or monitored responses. The whole thing is fairly tongue in cheek. I went out to make something fairly unhinged and I liked the idea of trying character-based writing.”
On the track, he showcases his soulful voice over chunky chords and jaunty drums. Cook straddles the line between Top 40 Pop and blues rock, grounding everything in his completely infectious vocal melodies. It’s a burst of eclectic energy that shows continued promise for the English teen.
