The Weinstein Company has revealed the cast of its upcoming Richard Pryor biopic, and it’s a doozy.
Eddie Murphy will play the comedian’s father Leroy “Buck Carter” Pryor, while Oprah will portray his grandmother, who ran a brothel and raised him. Kate Hudson has been cast to play Pryor’s wife, Jennifer Lee, and none other than Mike Epps has been bestowed the tall task of portraying the legendary comic.
Lee Daniels (The Butler, FOX’s Empire) will direct the film with a script by Danny Strong (Empire). Jennifer Lee Prior is also said to be heavily involved in the production, which will begin filming next March.
According to Deadline, Epps has been in line to play Pryor for over a decade, as he was originally handpicked by the comedian when he himself was working on a film in 2005. However, following Pryor’s death, filmmakers considered other choices, including Michael B. Jordan, Marlon Wayans, and Nick Cannon.
