Fever the Ghost stay weird on new single “1518” — listen

on August 20, 2015, 10:00am

It requires a special kind of weird to become fast fwends with the likes of The Flaming Lips’ Wayne Coyne, but LA’s Fever the Ghost is just the right type of odd. After demonstrating their experimental psych skills on the With a Little Help From My Fwends’ version of “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” and their own Crab in Honey debut EP, FTG is set to stay strange with its first full-length, Zirconium MeconiumThey’ve already shared the lead single, “Vervain (Dreams of an Old Wooden Cage)”, and now they’re premiering new track “1518”.

Like much of Fever the Ghost’s material, “1518” floats from one psych-fused style to the next on squeaky, squishy waves of shimmering synths and guitars. There’s Flaming Lips absurdity on every chorus that bleeds into cartoonish pop sounds and pinched background vocals. Bridges are built on brightly colored, pixelated rubix cubes that don’t quite fit together and seem to be constantly shifting, yet crossing them feels enlightening rather than dangerous. In the middle of it all is a hook that rouses the spirit with near Sigur Rós-ian levels of beauty: “‘Cause who wants the truth?/ There is no truth.”

Take a listen below.
