One of the most buzzed about movies out of this year’s Sundance Film Festival was the colonial horror film The Witch. Written and directed by first-timer Robert Eggers, the film follows a devout Christian family who pack up their home and move out into the wilderness to begin a new life. When their crops start to fail and the youngest child goes missing, the family slowly turns on each other while a supernatural force creates fear and danger just beyond the edge of the woods.

The Witch, starring Anya Taylor-Joy, Ralph Ineson, and Kate Dickie, will receive a wide release in 2016. Watch the first trailer below.

Reviews out of Sundance were off the charts, with many declaring it one of the best horror films the festival had seen in recent memory. That’s saying something considering It Follows also premiered at this year’s festival.

Eggers, who won Sundance’s Best Director award and was heralded for his commitment to period appropriate attire and settings, was recently hired to helm a remake of the horror classic Nosferatu.
