Looks like Woody is finally going to lasso up the girl of his dreams. Disney Chief Creative Officer John Lasseter revealed plot details about the forthcoming Toy Story 4 at the D23 expo in Anaheim, and he’s confirmed that the film will center on a long-brewing romance.
“It’s a love story with Woody and — and this is news — Bo Peep,” Lasseter said. “At Pixar and at Disney, we only make sequels if we come up with a story that’s as good or better than the original. That’s our rule. We don’t do things just to print money.”
Woody and Bo Peep shared a not-so-subtle flirtation throughout Toy Story and its sequel, but the character was largely absent from Toy Story 3. (She appears in home video flashbacks of Andy.) The implication was that she was sold or given away, and thus was not given to little Bonnie with the rest of the toys at the end of Toy Story 3. Will this new movie find Woody and Bo Peep on a journey to reconnect? Or perhaps they’ll write over the whole thing and just put the two together from the beginning. We’ll see when Toy Story 4 hits theaters on June 16th, 2017.
After helming the first two films and executive producing the third, Lasseter returns to the director’s chair for Toy Story 4 alongside Josh Cooley (the voice of Omega in Up and Jangles in Inside Out). Tim Allen and Tom Hanks have signed on to reprise their respective roles as Buzz Lightyear and Woody, though it’s currently unknown if Annie Potts (Ghostbusters‘ Janine — bet ya didn’t know that one, huh?) will once again voice Bo Peep.
