Sony Pictures confirms release dates for Jumanji remake, Bad Boys sequels, and Stephen King’s The Dark Tower

We haven’t yet reached the tail-end of the year, but Sony Pictures has already mapped out its release schedule for 2016 through 2017. As Variety points out, the entertainment behemoth will release 16 films altogether, including a number of sequels, remakes, and franchise debuts.

One of the earliest features to hit the big screen is a remake of Jumanji, slated to make its debut on December 25, 2016. The film will be based on the 1995 fantasy-adventure film, which starred Robin Williams and Kirsten Dunst, whose own story was inspired by the children’s novel of the same name by Chris Van Allsburg.

Just a few weeks later, the first installment of Stephen King’s “The Dark Tower” franchise is expected to open in theaters on January 13, 2017. As we previously noted, “the series follows gunslinger Roland Deschain, who must travel through an alternate universe full of magic and evil forces to reach the mysterious and all-encompassing Dark Tower.” Danish filmmaker Nikolaj Arcel, known for the 2012 Oscar-nominated movie A Royal Affair, is set to direct.

Also of importance is Bad Boys 3, the first Bad Boys film since 2003, due out on February 17, 2017. Some two years later Bad Boys 4 is expected to follow on July 3, 2019. Though Will Smith and Martin Lawrence starred in the franchise’s first two pictures, it’s unclear whether they’ll reprise their roles for these upcoming releases.
