When a band’s PR introduces them as “shitstarters,” you’re in for a treat. The Yawpers come out of some beer-drenched hole in Denver, full of fuzzy slide guitar with one ear towards 1970s rock and roll and another towards 1960s Delta blues. After self-releasing their Capon Crusades debut and the Savage Blue EP, the threesome has signed to Bloodshot Records for their forthcoming sophomore album, American Man.

Lead singer and guitarist Nate Cook tells Consequence of Sound that the album “was recorded almost entirely live, and done analogue for the most part as well. All in the same room, eyeball to eyeball, trying to capture what we do live as best we could.” The result is as sweaty as it is smokey, a raucous collection of tracks that is certain to start some shit. It’s out October 30th, and is being led by the first single, “Deacon Brodie”.

The track stomps in on rumbling drums and the speedy twang of guitar riffs. “I want to be your man,” Cook sings out on the chorus, though that seems more like a threat than a lover’s beckoning. “‘Deacon Brodie’ is a perversion of the story of William Brodie, who was a Scottish cabinet maker that moonlighted as a thief,” Cook reveals. “We tried to couch his darker side in sex, masochism, and the joy of deception. His story is also interesting in that he is credited with having designed the gallows that he would eventually hang from himself.”

The historical tilt is nothing new for the band. Their name comes from a line in Walt Whitman’s “Leaves of Grass”: “I sound my barbaric yawp over the roofs of the world.” It could just as well describe their musical style, as you can hear by checking out “Deacon Brodie” below.

Pre-orders for American Man are going on now. The band will support the release with an all-too-brief western tour, the dates of which are below.
