All Them Witches share new song “Open Passageways” — listen

on September 16, 2015, 11:15am

Nashville psych-rock outfit All Them Witches have always been adventurous. The group has already released two epics with 2012’s Our Mother Electricity and 2014’s Lightning at the Door. But now they’re attempting to dig even deeper into their grimy ethos. Holing up in a remote cabin in Tennessee for six days to record new material, creating a whole world and story with the songs. These sessions are now being released as their new album, Dying Surfer Meets His Maker, out October 30th via New West Records. Ahead of its release, the band has shared a new single called “Open Passageways”.

“’Open Passageways’ is just one chapter of Dying Surfer Meets His Maker, so while the songs may be enjoyed individually, in my mind, the balance is only complete when the album is played as a whole,” frontman Michael Parks tells Consequence Of Sound. “Imagine an alternate universe (not unlike our own) where the forces of choice and chance are palpable, and manifest in solid form to live out their destinies, just as anyone of us would. Intangibles awaken in this world, blind to it’s fragility, and try their hands at being human at any cost. This specific chapter is about the movement of people to find something better, instead of fixing what they already have and in turn unknowingly dig their proverbial ‘grave’ deeper and deeper.”

Though it may seem difficult to take the song out of context of the potentially massive story, “Open Passageways” works remarkably well as a standalone piece. The acoustic guitars add to the “homegrown cabin” idea, yet the chugging bass lines and guitar riffs that escalate further in the song suggest inner turmoil brewing beneath. Given Parks comments, this song feels like a crumbling of the old and resurgence of the new. It’s a captivating piece of rock that is as subtle as it is explosive.
