Father John Misty accused of ripping off Funny or Die sketch for new music video

on September 25, 2015, 10:55am

Father John Misty said he found inspiration for his “The Night Josh Tillman Came to Our Apartment” video in a LeBron James quote. However, Funny or Die is now accusing the I Love You, Honeybear singer of stealing the clip’s concept straight from actor Dave Franco.

In a post on its website, Funny or Die notes that Misty’s video uses dang near the exact same story of Franco’s “Go Fuck Yourself” video from 2011. In both clips, a dejected lead (Franco in 2011, Misty in 2015) goes to a bar and meets a handsome stranger who happens to look exactly like him. They order some drinks, have some fun, and end up sleeping together. Though that last scene is pretty strikingly different in both clips, there are some similarities.

As Funny or Die points out, both videos feature shots of the lead entering the bar, ordering two drinks, over the shoulder glances, two shot glasses from above, and even splashing in water. To be fair, Franco’s shot glasses are getting filled and Misty’s are being slammed down empty, Franco’s playing under a pier while Misty’s jumping fully clothed into a pool, and there are only so many ways to enter a bar and make “the eyes” at someone. Either way, the plots are definitely similar. A case of great minds thinking alike?

As for Misty, he wasn’t exactly sure the accusation was serious at first. He responded in typical sarcastic fashion on Twitter:
