Unless you’re Donald Trump, one of the first orders of business when running for president is to raise a shit ton of money. If Kanye West does indeed plan to run in 2020, he already has the backing of a Super PAC.
Yesterday, 24-year-old Baltimore native Eugene Craig filed paperwork with the Federal Election Commission to register the “Ready For Kanye” political action committee.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Craig explained why Kanye would make for a good presidential candidate:
“We have a gentleman in Mr. West who 1) stands for small business and entrepreneurship, has spoke out against corporatism; 2) is a school choicer, and has spoken about the racial disparities in regards to public school systems; and 3) has openly spoken out against the war on drugs and the pipeline that the war on drugs provides to the private prison systems.”
Craig also applauded West’s foreign policy: “He’s not for occupying every country in the Middle East. That’s a discussion that needs to take place right now.”
As of now, the “Ready For Kanye” Super PAC does not plan to raise any money, but “it would be nice to have some data mined and voters reached” if Kanye does decide to run, explained Craig.
It’s worth noting that “Ready For Kanye” encourages the rapper to run as a republican, so there’s that.
For its part, the current administration is also encouraging Kanye to run. White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest told reporters that the White House looks ““forward to seeing what slogan [Kanye] chooses to embroider on his campaign hat.”
Of course, this could all be for naught, as it certainly seems like Kanye was joking about the whole thing. This is further evidenced by video of a fan yelling “Kanye for president!” seconds before Kanye made the “announcement” at the VMAs on Sunday. But one can always dream.
