Megafaun’s members have been involved in various one-off projects over the last few months, including collaborations with Sharon Van Etten (I Don’t Want To Let You Down) and The Mountain Goats’ John Darnielle (a cover of The Grateful Dead’s “A Friend of the Devil”). Now, the band’s own Phil Cook is looking to make a name for himself with his debut solo album, Southland Mission, due out on September 11th.
Cook, who also lends his talents to Hiss Golden Messenger, is teasing the new LP with “Ain’t It Sweet”, which features additional vocals from Justin Vernon. Both Cook and the Bon Iver mastermind are hardly strangers; they once played together in the group DeYarmond Edison before parting ways in 2006 and forming their own respective bands. Cook also performed at Vernon’s inaugural Eaux Claires Festival last month.
Below, listen to the spirited number, which makes great use of a tinny, saloon piano.
