For the first time ever, there’s real Oscar buzz surrounding a film coming out of Netflix Studios. And based on the new trailer for Beasts of No Nation, the talk is far from unwarranted.
Director Cary Fukunaga follows up his stellar True Detective (season one, of course) with the Idris Elba-starring film about “a young West African boy is forced to join a unit of mercenary fighters and transform into a child soldier.” Elba portrays the leader who recruits the boy, played by 14-year-old newcomer Abraham Attah. It’s Elba’s intense performance as the unnamed Commandant that has people wondering if the Academy will overcome the stigma and nominate a film released by a streaming service. Based on the few looks we’ve seen thus are, it’ll sure be hard not to.
