PWR BTTM travels back to “1994” on glammy new single — listen

on September 04, 2015, 3:17pm

Brooklyn duo PWR BTTM describe themselves as “genre-queer,” which is as much a pun as it is a label defier. On the one hand, their sound blurs lines between glam rock, ’90s indie, stadium rock, and what their PR refers to as queer punk. On the other, drummer Liv Bruce and guitarist Ben Hopkins wear their queer identities as equal part badge of honor and mission statement.

“As queer people, a lot of our lives are prescribed for us in terms of who we ‘can’ be in pop culture,” Hopskins said in an interview with Overblown. “Like you can be someone’s hairdresser or wacky best friend, but often times you can’t be the protagonist in your own life.” As PWR BTTM, the pair is taking control with their forthcoming debut LP, Ugly Cherries. Due out September 18th via Father/Daughter and Miscreant Records, they’ve today shared the album’s latest single, “1994”, via NPR.

There’s a wistful energy all over the track, from the can-kicking guitar lines to the disenfranchised lyrics: “These days it pays to be so strange/ and I’m like nothing.” But any sore feelings are burned away with one crackling “YEAH!” and the subsequent glamorous guitar solo. If the song opens feeling a touch melancholic, it manages to become downright anthemic with its quivering lines of “oooh.” Take a listen below.
