Ronda Rousey to fill Patrick Swayze’s shoes in Road House reboot

on September 09, 2015, 2:30pm

Ronda Rousey, the current UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion and arguably the most famous UFC fighter of all time, has been making a steady push into Hollywood recently. She appeared in Furious 7 and the Entourage movie, and just announced a starring role as herself in an 8 Mile-style autobiographical film. News has now come that Rousey has nabbed her biggest role to date, as Variety reports she’s signed on for a reboot of the 1989 action film Road House.

The original starred the late Patrick Swayze as the iconic Dalton, a tough-as-nails bouncer with a philosophy degree who is hired to clean up the rowdy Double Deuce bar in a small Missouri town. Dalton’s zen-like calm is put to the test when he has to face down the town’s ruthless leader, Brad Wesley (the late Ben Gazzara). Though nominated for a slew of Razzies the year of its release, the film is now held up as a cult classic and one of Swayze’s most memorable roles.

Rousey has some big shoes to fill, but MGM has faith in her. She’s already reached out to Swayze’s widow, Lisa Niemi, to ask her blessings in taking the role, and Niemi reportedly gave them gladly. Production is set to begin next year, with MGM currently searching for screenwriters.

Road House marks the fourth project currently being designed around Rousey. Besides the autobio-pic My Fight/Your Fight, she’s set to appear in The Athena Project for Warner Bros. and the actioner Mile 22 for STX with Pete Berg directing. She also has a November 14th fight scheduled against Holly Holm, and has been gunning for the lead in Marvel’s forthcoming Captain Marvel.

I’d been hesitant about supporting Rousey for the latter part, simply because I hadn’t seen her acting chops. But if she can pull off a watchable version of Dalton, she’s my Carol Danvers for sure. Let’s rumble. Watch the original Road House trailer below.
