No one will deny John Lennon’s musical genius, but by most accounts the former Beatle also had a dark side. Allegations of his domestic violence and emotional abuse are well documented, and a newly uncovered video provides a glimpse at such behavior.
A recent episode of UK television show It Was Alright in the ’60s aired video in which Lennon appears to mock disabled people during a Beatles concert. In the clip, which you can see below, Lennon speaks with a speech impediment and awkwardly claps and stomps his feet.
Lorainne Bellamy, a spokewoman for the disability charity Mencap, responded to the video in an interview with The Independent, calling it “shocking and painful to watch.” She added, “Times may have changed, but I always find it hard to believe how such famous people can have these horrible views about real people.”
