As the second trilogy explained in tiresome, dry detail, the base of the Star Wars universe is really a political story. It’s all about who runs what when, so I guess it’s not terribly surprising that there’s some crossover between the governmentally minded and the midichlorianly boosted. In fact, one Ukrainian Chewbacca recently appeared outside an Odessa polling station on the day of mayoral elections to campaign for his preferred candidate, Darth Vader.
Now, excusing the inaccuracy that Chewie would ever vote for a Lord of the Sith, there was another problem with the costumed fan’s position. Namely, it’s illegal in the Ukraine to campaign on election day, when it’s considered “political agitation.” As such, the Cosplaying politico was arrested by local authorities and brought to court.
It took four officers to finally subdue Chewbacca, as seen in video from the Irish Examiner. If you thought it was strange they didn’t try to remove his giant mask before having him duck down into the squad car, check out the pictures of the disheveled Wookie sitting in court. Amazingly, the guy got off with paying the equivalent of $7, or about 11.59 Galactic Credits.
