We haven’t heard much from Eleanor Friedberger since Personal Record, her stellar 2013 LP which boasted one of the best songs of the year in “Stare at the Sun”. Thankfully, the singer-songwriter is back, this week returning with her first new track in over two years, and her first for new label home Frenchkiss Records.
Titled “False Alphabet City”, it’s a jaunty, freewheeling jam that Friedberger wrote while taking part in the visual artist Sara Magenheimer’s False Alphabets film. A press release explains further:
“Eleanor adapted Sara’s script into songs and performed them with her band at Recess, the SOHO gallery that hosted Sara’s residency. ‘False Alphabet City’ became the anthemic theme song for this video-based artwork about language, music and the radio voice as a life-line in our contemporary atmosphere of cultural alienation.”
Check out the song below via its corresponding video, which features footage from the film.
Additionally, The Fiery Furnaces member will soon hit the road for a short run of intimate tour dates, where she’s expected to play old songs as well as “new material.”
