Former manager Jerry Heller suing NWA over Straight Outta Compton portrayal

Straight Outta Compton has won over many fans from film critics, to rap fans, to studio execs, who have already greenlit a sequel. However, N.W.A’s former manager Jerry Heller wasn’t impressed. Upset with how he was portrayed in the film and some of its purported inaccuracies, Heller has filed a huge lawsuit against Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, Eazy-E’s estate, NBC Universal, and others involved in the production.

TMZ reports that the defamation suit centers around how Heller, played by Paul Giamatti, is presented as “a sleazy manager who took advantage of Eazy-E, Dr. Dre and Ice Cube,” something Heller claims is a “false and damaging” portrayal. He also points to a few specific “lies” the films tells, including that he illegally forced Dre and Cube to sign bad contracts, withheld money from Ice Cube, and was fired by Eazy-E. He also disputes the idea that he chowed down on a lobster lunch while N.W.A. signed the aforementioned bad deals.

Heller also says he never gave permission for the film to use his likeness, and takes issue with the fact that producers didn’t give his character a fake name like “Gary Beller.” The suit is seeking $35 million in compensatory damages plus $75 million in punitive damages, for a whopping $110 million total. But that’s not all, as he’s also apparently asking for all — to reiterate, that’s every last cent — of the film’s profits. Good luck, buddy.
