The pop maestro that is Jeff Lynne will return with his beloved Electric Light Orchestra in just two weeks’ time with their first new album since 2001’s Zoom. Dropping November 13th via Columbia Records under the name Jeff Lynne’s ELO, Alone in the Universe features twelve tracks set to remind listeners just how classic the ELO sound is. We’ve already heard “When I Was a Boy” and “When the Night Comes”, and now we’ve been given a third preview of the LP in the form of “One Step at a Time”.
The track is an old-fashioned song of love and desire, but with a distinctly Lynne-ian flair. Bleating synths putter throughout while guitar lines bend like the swaying gait of a lovestruck boy. The chorus, meanwhile, renews your faith in the cowbell, the steady beating driving on the soaring harmonies as Lynne demonstrates his immaculate upper register by singing, “One step at a time/ I’m trying to get to you girl/ One step at a time/ You’re gonna talk to me.”
