The National frontman Matt Berninger and Brent Knopf of Menomena/Ramona Falls have already shared a large helping of their collaborative album as EL VY. In anticipation of its October 30th, we’ve heard the Return to the Moon title track along with “I’m the Man to Be” and “No Time to Crank the Sun”. Now, the super duo has delivered a track called “Paul Is Alive”.
“I think ‘Paul Is Alive’ is about finally finding the water that you can breathe in, finding a place or a person that makes you feel like you,” explains Berninger in a statement. “It’s very much my story of what Cincinnati was like, growing up and falling in love with music, discovering these little places where like-minded people could find each other.”
With synths plinking off somewhere between somewhere between carefree and glum, guitars and bass swing about with the swagger of a person just getting their buzz on. Berninger gives a a shout out to a few of the people and places that opened his mind to music: “Sitting outside the Jockey Club, crying in my 7-Up/ I could hear Hüsker Du and The Smiths/ The Sluggos, The Cramps go bup bup bup bup inside.” Check it out via the lyric video below.
