Jimmy Kimmel has been making Mondays fun as of late thanks to his weekly collaborative series, “Mash Up Mondays”. The simple formula of finding musical acts with similar sounding names but differing styles and propping them onstage together has delivered such glory as Morris Day and The HAIM and Joss Stone Temple Pilots. This week, the late night host was at it again by teaming up Jewel and Kool & The Gang.
Going by the rhyme appropriate Jewel & The Gang, the supergroup performed a medley of classics from the seminal funk band’s repertoire. Jewel’s sultry voice and crystal highs were a perfect fit for “Hollywood Swinging” and the grooving “Ladies Night”. It’s right around “Celebration”, however, that the whole thing started feeling a bit like live band karaoke. Jewel has proven she can soar in a rock ‘n’ roll setting (thanks, Foo Fighters), but the soul/R&B crossover may be best left to Joss Stone Temple Pilots. Still, it was a fun once-in-a-lifetime performance, and you can re-watch it below.
