M.I.A. highlights the refugee experience in video for “Borders” — watch

on November 27, 2015, 1:20pm

When M.I.A. announced her album/film project Matahdatah, she promised that each of the LP’s singles would be accompanied by a video. After sharing “Borders” last week, the always politically minded alt-rapper has released the track’s video focusing on the refugee crisis.

The juxtaposition of images with the lyrics makes plenty of sense when you pay attention to phrases like, “Borders,” “politics,” “police shots,” “identities”, “your privilege,” and “boat people” all followed by the question, “What’s up with that?” M.I.A. places herself in front of various scenes heartbreakingly familiar to refugees around the world, like climbing over metal fences (hi, Donald) or being crowded on boats with dozens of other stark-faced escapees. Check out the video below.

There’s no official release date for Matahdatah as of yet. However, M.I.A.’s recent audiovisual piece “Broader Than a Border” did feature another new track supposedly from the album, “Swords”.
