Nathaniel Rateliff has been rocking about the folk scene for about a decade now, but he’s never seen the success he’s having with his latest outfit, The Night Sweats. With its soulful spin on Rateliff’s previous styles, the band’s self-titled debut has led to sold out tours and raving late night performances. They struck the boob tube once again last night with an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
“Folks, I don’t know about you, but I’m just here for the band,” Colbert said to introduce Rateliff and the boys. Given their rollicking performance of “I Need Never Get Old”, it’s highly possible the host wasn’t just joking around. The song was a foot-stomping prototype of tension and release, with bluesy verses giving way to Rateliff’s big, twanging howls and his band’s horns-blaring rave-up on the choruses.
