Ryan Gosling eyed for Neil Armstrong in biopic from Damien Chazelle

Ryan Gosling must be having a good time with Damien Chazelle over in La La Land, because he’s already eyeing another flick with the director. Deadline is reporting that Gosling is orbiting the role of Neil Armstrong in Universal’s forthcoming biopic, First Man.

The folks behind the film, which is still being scripted by Josh Singer (Spotlight), are apparently keen on getting Gosling to take the lead. Chazelle, who gained notoriety following Whiplash, is currently working with the actor on the jazz musical La La Land, so the courtship may be taking place right on set.

First Man, based on James Hansen’s biography First Man: A Life Of Neil A. Armstrong, would recount the 1969 Apollo 11 mission which put man on the moon for the first time. With the 50th anniversary of the landmark event fast approaching, it would make sense that a film studio would like to get a related movie prepped for landing.

Gosling, meanwhile, recently confirmed his involvement in the Blade Runner sequel, saying it would likely be his next project. With that film set to go into production next summer, First Man could conceivably be Gosling’s follow-up and Universal could still have it out in time for the anniversary.
