When the announcement went out for Santigold’s long-awaited follow-up to Master of My Make-Believe, entitled 99¢, it came with the promise of numerous collaborations. Vampire Weekend’s Rostam Batmanglij and Hit-Boy are said to be on the record, among others. Today, Santigold has revealed the first of the album’s collaborations, “Who be Lovin’ Me”, which features rapper iLoveMakonnen.
“So dear, what’s it gonna be?” the pair ask over the track’s hazy, smoked out instrumentals, “‘Cause I got boys around the world who be lovin’ me.” The beat is built on light percussion and some throbbing synths courtesy of Zeds Dead. “We met Makonnen on the Mad Decent Boat Party last year and knew he could kill this beat,” the Toronto-based production duo said in a press release. “He hit us up and said he and Santigold both were jumping on it. We’re big fans of hers, so when he brought that back to us it was a no-brainer. The record just came together really naturally and the final cut is something we’re all really happy with.”
The track comes by way of a video directed by Santigold herself alongside Trouble Andrew. Filmed at this year’s Made in America festival in Philadelphia, the clip sees Santi and Makonnen riding dirty through the festival grounds on their personal Cadillac Escalade golf cart. Along the way, they bump into other festival performers including A-Trak, Big Sean, De La Soul Earl Sweatshirt, Fabolous, Meek Mill, Vic Mensa, and others, so keep your eyes peeled.
