Someone rev up the hogs and cue some Berlin: It looks like Val Kilmer’s LT Tom “Iceman” Kazanski is enlisting in Top Gun 2.
Or maybe not. Depends on how much truth there is to his late night Facebook habits. The wild veteran actor just turned everyone’s heads away from Star Wars: Battlefront with this whopper of a status:
So, if this is all legit: Gene Hackman is coming out of retirement for his first role since 2004’s Welcome to Mooseport. And director Francis Ford Coppola will step into the director’s chair for the late Tony Scott. Hmm.
Update: Mr. Kilmer clarified his comments this morning, stating: “These were examples of what u say yes to. If your going to do an action picture than u should have the most successful producer in Hollywood history do it. And you should have Tom Cruise in it. Just sayin. They called, and I said yes.” Classic move, Iceman.
It’s a questionable slice of news, that’s for sure, but it’s not exactly a long shot. After all, Skydance CEO David Ellison confirmed earlier this summer that a sequel is on the way with Tom Cruise’s Maverick set to return, this time engaging in drone warfare:
“It is very much a world we live in today where it’s drone technology, and fifth-generation fighters are really what the United States Navy is calling the last man-made fighter that we’re actually going to produce, so it’s really [about] exploring the ‘end of an era’ of dogfighting and fighter pilots and what that culture is today,” Ellison explained. “The plot will take place in the present day to account for the decades between the sequel and 1986.”
Cruise proved game for the idea shortly after Ellison’s comments, adding: “It would be fun. I would like to get back into those jets. It would have to be practical. I don’t want any CGI jets. I want to shoot it like how we shot the first one.”
At the time of publishing, Kenny Loggins has yet to comment. Or announce anything on Facebook.
