Last weekend at a Deerhunter show in Asheville, North Carolina, Bradford Cox recounted a not-so-pleasent encounter he had with Billy Corgan while opening for Smashing Pumpkins in 2007. The story involved a bodyguard tossing Cox against the wall, Corgan verbally berating him, the destruction of Moses Archuleta’s drum kit, and eventually the threat of a lawsuit, all for essentially stealing a bottle of water. When video of Cox’s story went viral, Corgan’s manager once again threatened Cox with legal action, this time for slander. Cox apologized and retracted his remarks, but he wasn’t about to let the drama end that easily.
At Deerhunter’s Philadelphia show on Sunday, Cox and his band took a subtle jab at Corgan when they started covering the opening riff of Smasing Pumpkin’s classic “Today” off Siamese Dream. Instead of a straight cover, though, the song spiraled out into a 10-minute jam with Cox riffing off some choice lyrics for Corgan. “Dear Billy Corgan/ I don’t even know you man,” he began. “Please don’t sue me/ I love my dog/ And I don’t have that much money/ And I don’t think you’re the kind of person/ Who’d starve somebody’s dog/ Just to prove a point.”
There’s no telling how Corgan will react if his people get wind of this one, but there’s a very real chance they will now that video has surfaced online. That’s despite Cox ending the song by saying, “Whoever uploads that to YouTube can suck my dick.” Well, YouTube user boz888, on your knees.
