When Adele stunned the world with her smash return single “Hello”, Lionel Richie fans were understandably taken a back. There were accusations that the British songstress had essentially stolen the idea and emotional arc of Richie’s iconic 1984 hit incidentally also titled “Hello”. While the similarities miffed some folks, others saw it as a sign that an Adele/Richie collaboration could actually be pretty fantastic. Well, say hello to your dreams, because it turns out the partnership is actually in the works.
“We are going to be doing something together — that’s already almost in the works,” Richie told EW. She is committed to that.” Currently, the last date on the trek is June 13th, so it’s probably best to temper expectations.
Still, Richie seems thrilled that Adele’s choice of song title and lead single has led to the potential of them working together. “What it did was it blew everything to the ceiling,” he said of Adele’s “Hello”. “The conversation came up. If you say Adele and you say Lionel or Lionel and Adele … that’s the best pairing you could have!”
In fact, the original “Hello” singer initially responded to Adele’s version with his very own, spot on meme:
