According to Deadline, Idris Elba has emerged as the front-runner to play Roland Deschain, the cowboy protagonist who wields a pair of revolvers crafted from the same metal as the Excalibur. Fans recognize the hero for his tough exterior and rogue ambition, both qualities that suit Elba well. Lest we forget this is the same guy fans want for the next James Bond.
The news comes in the wake of rampant speculation that Sony is also in talks with Matthew McConaughey to play the villainous Man in Black. It’s a good bet, seeing as how McConaughey was previously linked to Man in Black alter-ego Randall Flagg in Josh Boone’s forthcoming adaptation of King’s legendary 1978 novel, The Stand.
Fun fact: Both Elba (Beasts of No Nation) and McConaughey (True Detective) worked with director Cary Fukunaga, who was once tied to a reimagining of King’s It. Isn’t that weird? It is weird.
The director for this film, however, is Danish filmmaker Nikolaj Arcel (A Royal Affair). Realistically, we should be hearing more news on The Gunslinger, as Sony wants the film out in theaters by January 13th, 2017. Again, if they need any help, we’ve done all the leg work for them: Behold, the Stephen King Universe!
