For years, while every store has blasted “Jingle Bell Rock” or “All I Want for Christmas”, Jews have had to find respite in the one quality Hanukkah song, courtesy of Adam Sandler. Thanks to Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, though, we members of the tribe now have a fresh new tune to hum during the holiday season.
The band recently released their new album It’s a Holiday Soul Party, and the opening track happens to be just for the yamaka crowd. “8 Days (of Hanukkah)” is the swinging soul single Semites never knew they were missing, hitting all the right holiday marks. With the Festival of Lights beginning last night, Jones and the Dap-Kings have shared their new School House Rock-style animated video for the track.
The old school animation heightens the lyric video’s sense of playfulness. It’s hard not to chuckle when Jones belts out, “Fry a bunch of latkas!” and you see those potato pancakes dancing in the pan. Or when she sings about “Five dollar checks from Great Grandma Sal” and there’s the visual bringing you right back to tearing open that envelope to find a slip of nigh-useless paper. It’s the kind of spot-on recounting of exactly what the Hanukkah experience is like and delivered with such soulful sincerity (“Talking about that menorah!”) that you can’t help but laugh a little.
