Take a trip inside Björk’s mouth in video for “Mouth Mantra” — watch

on December 04, 2015, 10:25am

Björk’s videos behind the fantastic Vulnicura have each been wildly unique. “Stonemilker” was designed for the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset, which isn’t even on the market yet, while “Black Lake” was a MoMA-commissioned art film. The trend continues with the Icelandic songstress’ latest clip for “Mouth Mantra”.

In order to carry out her vision for the video, director Jesse Kanda had to create an entirely new type of camera. Most of the footage is from the inside of Björk’s mouth while she’s actually singing, so you can imagine how your standard GoPro wouldn’t get the job done. Whatever Kanda came up with, it provides a kaleidoscopic view of slippery pink slopes and pearly white caps, chomping and swirling as Björk sings her “little therapeutic song about the throat.”

“i am so extremely grateful to jesse to be up for going on this journey,” Björk wrote about the video. “it was brave of him to take it on and i feel spoiled having witnessed him grow… his dedication and devotion is overwhelming !!!

i am especially grateful for those sassy dancefloor moments we managed to squeeze in there aswell : true magic !!”

Check out the video below.

Kanda had his own comments about the clip, and shared his hopes for what viewers take away from it:

“If there’s one thing I’d like for people to take away from this video, it’s the power of vulnerability. That is what Björk’s album Vulnicura is all about to me, and hopefully this video reflects that. It’s about having the courage to express yourself and seeing yourself in that mirror. Doing something that scares the shit out of you and sharing it, growing from it, spreading love and courage to others and making the world a warmer place to be and relate to each other.”
