Christmas isn’t for another week, but The Shins received their gifts early. Recently, James Mercer & co. learned that their 2012 cover of Paul McCartney’s “Wonderful Christmastime” had ousted Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You” as the most popular holiday tune among shoppers, according to PlayNetwork, a company that curates playlists for stores around the US.
“Well, we’ve always been super-popular on the Island of Misfit Toys so it was just a matter of time before the human world embraced our incredible Christmas spirit!” Mercer told EW.com upon hearing about the top honors.
It’s not just The Shins who’ve been graced with good news, however. Fans of the band have reason to celebrate, too. Today, the group’s label Columbia sent out an email promising that new music would be on the way in 2016. “Happy Holidays from The Shins,” the message reads. “New year, new music!”
Any new material from The Shins camp would serve as their first since “So Now What”, the band’s contribution to Zach Braff’s 2014 film, Wish I Was Here. The Shins’ last full-length releases were 2013’s Live at Third Man Records and 2012’s Port of Morrow.
Below, revisit the outfit’s version of “Wonderful Christmastime” and “So Now What”.
