Bombino unveils new single “Inar”, produced by Dirty Projectors’ Dave Longstreth — listen

on January 21, 2016, 12:30pm

Tuareg guitar aficionado Omara Moctar, aka Bombino, called on The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach to produce his fourth studio album, 2013’s well-received Nomad. For his upcoming follow-up, titled Azel, Bombino has enlisted the help of another indie veteran in Dave Longstreth of Dirty Projectors.

The two recorded the LP at Applehead Studio in Woodstock, New York last fall, the converted barn and surrounding farmlands a decidedly different landscape than what Bombino — a native of West African nation Niger — was used to.

“It was like paradise,” he told Rolling Stone. “Except for the farm animals that would come and bother us now and then, we were totally alone with nothing to do but to relax and make our music in a beautiful, green environment.”

For Longstreth, who’s been a Bombino fan since 2009’s Group Bombino’s Guitars from Agadez, simply being in the same workspace was an awe-inspiring experience. “His presence and focus as a player was amazing,” he explained. “I took my cues from Bombino. I didn’t want to impose a sonic stamp. When you’ve got such a great band, that sounds so amazing in a room, it’s just about capturing it, getting the sound of the instruments in the air. The art is in their playing.”

Ahead of Azel’s April 1st release date via Partisan Records, Bombino and Longstreth have shared the captivating lead single, “Inar (If You Know The Degree Of My Love For You)”. Stream it below.
