For nearly 15 years Michael Mann has been working on a biopic about Ferrari founder Enzo Ferrari. As Variety reports, the film has hit yet another snag as Christian Bale has dropped out of the film’s starring role.
According to Variety, Bale’s decision stemmed from health concerns, specifically the weight gain required for the role. Over the years Bale has earned a reputation for his willingness to gain and lose massive amounts of weight for roles in films like The Machinist and American Hustle. However, this time Bale didn’t think he’d be able to pack on the necessary pounds prior to the film going into production this spring.
Based on Brock Yates’ book, Enzo Ferrari: The Man, the Cars, the Races, the film will take place in the ’50s and follow the iconic car company’s manufacturer in his quest for success and love. Variety reports that Mann is already looking for Bale’s replacement.
