Mexican post-metal duo Low Flying Hawks reveal “Wolves Within Wolves” — listen

on January 26, 2016, 4:40pm

Enigmatic Mexican post-metal duo Low Flying Hawks will drop their debut album, Kofuku, on February 16th via Magnetic Eye. As the latest tease of the record, the band has premiered the new track “Wolves Within Wolves”.

We put Kofuku on our top 20 most anticipated metal albums of 2016 list for good reason. Featuring the Melvins’ Dale Crover on drums, Low Flying Hawks tap into a highly accessible heaviness that falls between droning shoegaze and the melodic metal of Deftones. “Wolves Within Wolves” proves that the band can be both crushing and mellow at the same time. An uplifting guitar lead opens the track softly before being overtaken by a crash of deep rhythms and cymbals. Halfway in, the track breaks down into a fat stoner metal riff before reconciling its somber intro. Low Flying Hawks are not easily classifiable, but rather a melding of heavy styles. Their sound is limitless.

Singer EHA’s passionate vocals float amidst these textures — his words lost in a wash of reverb. “This song talks about coming to realize that darkness and light fuse within each and everyone of us, and there is no way to separate them,” EHA said. “They’re built together and work together, and we need both of them to function properly. Quoting Camus, ‘There is no sun without shadow, and it is essential to know the night.'”

Take a listen below.

Kofuku was produced by Toshi Kasai (Big Business, Melvins) and is available for pre-order digitally and on vinyl and CD via Magnetic Eye.
