Savages deliver intense performance on Kimmel — watch

on January 21, 2016, 3:00pm

Typically when a band gets slotted for a late-night performance, they want to choose a high-energy, hook-heavy track to appeal to as wide an audience as possible. But Savages don’t do catchy; the London group’s sound is built on pummeling, visceral post-punk, and they aren’t going to shy away from that just because there are TV cameras pointed at them. That’s why their appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live last night might be one of the most intense talk show performances in recent memory.

In front of a wall of strobing, white lights, the band performed “The Answer” and the title track from their excellent sophomore album, Adore. Vocalist Jehnny Beth stalked the stage during the first song while her band laid down their hypnotic drone of noise, highlighted by Fay Milton’s simply stunning control of her drum kit. For “Adore”, the lights were kept low while the depth of Beth’s lyricism boiled up through the darkness.

Check out both performances below, and get ready for chills around the 3:20 mark of “Adore”.
