FOX teams with The Lonely Island for Mad TV sketch comedy follow-up

on February 04, 2016, 7:10pm

In recent years, Saturday Night Live has struggled to recapture the magic of its glory days. To add to the challenge, producer Lorne Michaels and co. will soon have to contend with a new player in the late-night sketch comedy game. Next month, FOX will debut a rival to SNL, re-entering the world of late-night sketch for the first time since the network closed the curtain on Mad TV after 14 seasons in 2009.

FOX’s new sketch comedy show is called Party Over Here and will air on Saturday nights beginning March 12th at 11 p.m. That’s 30 minutes before SNL, in case you’re keeping score. The show will be executive-produced by The League’s Paul Scheer as well as Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone, and Akiva Schaffer of the comedy trio The Lonely Island, all of whom appeared on SNL in prior seasons. “When we first conceived this idea, we thought of it as a spin-off of Empire,” The Lonely Island said in a light-hearted statement. “We failed miserably … now it’s much more of a sketch comedy show.”

Comedians Nicole Byer, Jessica McKenna, and former SNL writer Alison Rich are attached to star in Party Over Here, with live tapings to take place at Hotel Alexandria in downtown Los Angeles.
