Red Hot Chili Peppers performed at a Bernie Sanders fundraiser in Los Angeles on Friday night. It marked the band’s first time on stage since the death of David Bowie, and they paid tribute to the Thin White Duke by covering the Aladdin Sane track “Cracked Actor”. What’s more, Chad Smith’s custom drumhead featured a morphing of Sanders with Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust persona.

“Cracked Actor” is by no means the first time Chili Peppers have covered Bowie in concert. In the past, they’ve performed “Suffragette City”, and also released a live recording of the song on 2014’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Covers EP. And despite Bowie declining the band’s offers to collaborate, Flea furthered honored him by getting a lightning bolt tattoo in the days after his death.
Sanders himself is also a fan of Bowie and has made “Starman” his campaign theme song.
