Julian Casablancas covers The Velvet Underground’s “White Light/White Heat” — listen

on March 11, 2016, 1:26pm

HBO’s 1970s music drama Vinyl has received tepid reviews from critics — however, the show’s accompanying soundtrack is certainly worth making time for. The Strokes’ Julian Casablancas, Iggy Pop, The Kills’ Alison Mosshart, and Dan Auerbach’s The Arcs have all contributed music.

In fact, Casablancas covered not one, but two Velvet Underground songs for the show. Already we’ve heard his take on “Run Run Run”, and today brings the release of his faithful rendition of “White Light/White Heat”. As Stereogum points out, Casablancas’ version is specifically based on the version that appears on Lou Reed’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Animal live album. Listen below.

Also check out Pop’s Nervous Breakdowns cover “I Dig Your Mind”; Mosshart’s “My Time’s Coming” by The Punks; and the Auerbach-led Arcs’ take on Bobby Parker’s ‘Watch Your Step”.

All of the aforementioned tracks appear on Vinyl: Music From the HBO Series — Volume 1.5. It’s now available to purchase through iTunes.
