Modern Baseball share two songs from new album Holy Ghost — listen

The new album from Philly’s Modern BaseballHoly Ghostis a split LP in an atypical sense. Guitarists Jake Ewald wrote all the songs on the album’s A-side, while Brendan Lukens penned all those on the reverse. The follow-up to 2014’s beloved You’re Gonna Miss It All is due May 13th via Run for Cover, and today we get our first taste of what the dual songwriters bring to their respective contributions.

The Ewald-written “Everyday” is a pop-punk chugger, fuzzy guitars tumbling across a moody rhythm. Musically, the track is a low, slow growl of contemplation as the lyrics mine the mind for the meaning in seemingly minor life moments. “I have a pretty bad memory,” Ewald told NPR about the song. “When I manage to remember things from my past (recent or distant), they usually seem insignificant on the surface. Nevertheless, those are the things I remember, and most of the important stuff is forgotten. ‘Everyday’ is a short exhibit of those insignificant memories and an attempt at understanding their importance in my life.”

Meanwhile, Lukens’ contribution, the shimmering “Apple Cider I Don’t Mind”, moves with more of a swaying regret. The song’s danceable undercurrent suits Lukens’ voice well, highlighting the different strengths between the two songwriters and how well they play to their own skills. “Trust is something every growing relationship needs,” Lukens said of the song’s meaning. “Without trust, all your conversations are just questions and doubts. I lost my best friend and partner and didn’t know who to blame. ‘Apple’ is a toast to looking at past mistakes as a chance to move forward.”

Holy Ghost features 11 tracks, and it’s still unrevealed which musician received the extra writing credit. Find the full tracklist below.
