Stream: Nicholas Krgovich’s new album The Hills

on March 04, 2016, 11:55am

Multi-instrumentalist Nicholas Krgovich hails from Vancouver, but he can’t seem to get Los Angeles off his mind. The city’s “unknowable sprawl” became the thematic skeleton for Krgovich’s 2014 solo effort On Sunset and its companion, 2015’s On Cahuenga. Both albums explore how one can simultaneously feel in the middle of the universe and on the edge of the world.

Krgovich is now back with another set of love-hate tracks dedicated to the darker side of LA. Due out March 4th on Tin Angel Records, The Hills takes us back to the city of the songwriter’s imagination with 12 tracks soaked in analogue synths, tinkling bells, and pulsating beats. The origins of this project trace can be traced back nearly a decade — and to a surprising place. Krgovich started writing The Hills in 2008, in a snow-covered hut in the Rocky Mountains, far removed from the bright lights of Sunset Boulevard and the long, dark stretches of Mulholland Drive. He was influenced by “what I guess people call sophistipop,” he says, “Prefab Sprout, Talk Talk, The Blue Nile, Sade, music that makes me feel like I’m in the backseat of the car when I was a kid and it’s raining.”

Though it’s somewhat a record about alienation, Krgovich has never sounded more in his element than he does on The Hills. This guy needs to score the soundtrack to every film set in LA from this day forward, because his flowering violin arrangements, throwback hip-hop beats, and ghostly vocals are as evocative as images projected onto a screen. Nothing particularly stands out, but the individual elements are remarkable and, at times, remarkably off-putting.
