Sturgill Simpson announces new album, shares “Brace for Impact (Live a Little)” — listen

on March 04, 2016, 2:00pm

Sturgill Simpson’s Metamodern Sounds in Country Music received wide acclaim in 2014, ranking among one of the best albums of the year. Now, the alt country songwriter is hoping to follow up on that success with new album A Sailor’s Guide to Earth.

Due out on April 15th through Atlantic Records, Simpson’s third album to date spans nine tracks, including a cover of Nirvana’s Nevermind classic “In Bloom”. A press release notes that the Simpson-produced LP was “written — beginning to end — as a letter to his first child who arrived during the summer of 2014.”

In addition to Simpson’s touring band, the new full-length features contributions from bassist Dave Roe (Johnny Cash), Dan Dugmore (James Taylor) on steel guitar, and The Dap-Kings, among others. Grammy-winner David Ferguson (Johnny Cash, John Prine) sat in as engineer during recording sessions at Nashville’s The Butcher Shoppe.

Our first look at the Sailor’s Guide comes courtesy of “Brace for Impact (Live a Little)”, which continues the space-y psychedelia of Metamodern Sounds. Stream it below.

Check out the album artwork and full tracklist below, followed by the dates for Simpson’s upcoming US tour.
