“That’s just Buzz”: Krist Novoselic shrugs off Buzz Osborne’s Montage of Heck criticism

on March 31, 2016, 5:10pm

Melvins frontman Buzz Osborne has never been shy about saying what’s on his mind, but he risked alienating event his clost friends last year when he slammed Montage of Heck, calling 90% of Brett Morgen’s Kurt Cobain documentary “total bullshit.” Yet it turns out that Osborne’s relationship with Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic, who appears in the film and contributed archival footage to it, is no worse for the wear.

“That’s just Buzz,” Novoselic told Rolling Stone. “He’s always been like that, but we love him so we just accept him for that. He’s always had these opinions. Like, ‘Oh, there goes Buzz again.’ You never know what he’s gonna say, but he means well, and he’s a great musician. He’s been a dear friend for a long time. That’s the way it is.”

Novoselic’s actions seem to back up his words. He’ll appear on the Melvins’ forthcoming album Basses Loaded, playing bass and accordion on a song entitled “Maybe I Am Amused”. Due out in June, the record features Osborne and longtime Melvins drummer Dale Crover playing alongside notable bassists including Novoselic, Butthole Surfers’ JD Pinkus, Redd Kross’ Steve McDonald, and Big Business’ Jared Warren.

“It’s always fun to play with Buzz and Dale,” Novoselic said of his contribution. “I brought my accordion and my bass down, and we just played some grungy heavy things. I had these tunes that were super pop, like with major chords and sevenths; those really, poppy things. So we just busted out some music.” Nirvana drummer and Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl was also supposed to contribute, but Osborne told Rolling Stone that Grohl simply “blew it off.” Not cool.

As for Osborne, he’s stayed busy working on a number of projects. On April 1st, Three Men and a Baby, the long-delayed, collaborative LP between godheadSilo’s Mike Kunka and the Melvins, will hit shelves. Click here for the full album stream.
