Bono, expert on Middle East extremism, proposes US government fight ISIS using comedy

on April 12, 2016, 9:52pm

While presidential candidates like Bernie Sanders, Hillary Clinton, and Donald Trump continue to debate over how to fight ISIS, U2 frontman Bono has come up with his own strategy.

Bono participated in a Senate subcommittee hearing today regarding “causes and consequences of violent extremism and the role of foreign assistance,” as Pitchfork points out. A foremost authority on the Middle East, the Irish rocker proposed an unusual way of combating extremist groups such as ISIS and Boko Haram: the mighty weapon of … comedy. As the saying goes, laughter is the best medicine, but Bono was completely serious in his proposal.

“I think comedy should be deployed,” he said. He explained further: “The first people that Adolf Hitler threw out of Germany were the dadaists and surrealists. It’s like, you speak violence, you speak their language. But you laugh at them when they are goose-stepping down the street and it takes away their power.”

The first few funny folks that he’d like to dispatch? “So I am suggesting that the Senate send in Amy Schumer and Chris Rock and Sacha Baron Cohen, thank you.”

(For what it’s worth, Schumer was pretty shocked by the idea.)
