David Bowie memorial concert: Michael Stipe, Pixies, Flaming Lips perform music of late icon

on April 01, 2016, 10:10am

Mere hours before David Bowie’s death, a tribute concert was announced for March 31st at New York City’s historic Carnegie Hall. Following his passing, the event became a two-night memorial, featuring a lineup that included the likes of R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe, Blondie, Pixies, Laurie Anderson, Cat Power, Mumford and Sons, The Flaming Lips, The Mountain Goats, J Mascis, and more.

Last night, the first of these memorial concerts took place at Carnegie Hall in New York City. The setlist saw performances of “Soul Love” by Anderson; “Starman” by Blondie’s Debbie Harry; “Word on a Wing” by The Mountain Goats; “Quicksand” by Mascis and Sean Lennon; “Five Years” by Cat Power; “Ashes to Ashes” by Stipe; “Cactus” by Pixies; and “Life on Mars?” by The Flaming Lips. Watch fan-shoot footage below.

The Roots were originally set to appear at the concert, but pulled out at the last minute. Questlove attributed to the decision to a dispute over shared equipment.

Night two of the Bowie memorial will take place this evening at Radio City Music Hall, with performances from Stipe, Blondie, Pixies, Mumford and Sons, Cat Power, Mascis, The Polyphonic Spree, and more. The concert will be streamed on Skype.
