Stream: Woods’ new album City Sun Eater in the River of Light

on April 01, 2016, 4:56pm

Prolific psychedelic folk rockers Woods will release their ninth album in 10 years, City Sun Eater in the River of Light, on April 8th via their own Woodsist label. A week ahead of the official street date, the entire thing is streaming in full below.

Singles like “Sun City Creeps” and “Can’t See at All” were well chosen introductions to the Brooklyn band’s expanded styles on the new LP. They both make use of dusty tones that seem to reverberate straight out of the ’70s while also touching on the dubby sounds of reggae in ever so subtle ways. Meanwhile, the sunbaked lull of “Morning Light” remind you of the band you’ve always known, while the jazzy rhythms of tracks like “The Take” enlighten you to who they’ve become.

As a press release puts it, City Sun Eater in the River of Light is “a dense record of rippling guitar, lush horns, and seductive, bustling anxiety about the state of the world. It’s still the Woods you recognize, only now they’re dabbling in zonked out Ethiopian jazz, pulling influence from the low key simmer of Brown Rice, and tapping into the weird dichotomy of making a home in a claustrophobic city that feels full of possibility even as it closes in on you.”

Take a listen below.

You can also grab a copy of the album with a sick, exclusive Woods skateboard deck through Habitat.
