You bred raptors? JA Bayona to direct Jurassic World sequel

on April 18, 2016, 1:30pm

With Colin Trevorrow busy working on Disney’s forthcoming Star Wars sequel, Episode IX, which he’s attempting to shoot partly in space, he’s had to hand off the keys to Universal’s Jurassic Park franchise. And now he knows who’s driving.

The winner of Jurassic World 2, or whatever it’ll be called, is none other than JA Bayona. That name might not ring a bell, but the Spanish filmmaker actually has an intriguing, albeit small, catalogue: 2007’s The Orphanage and 2012’s The Impossible.

Come October, he’ll return with his third feature film, Focus Features’ star-studded drama, A Monster Calls, which is more or less the Armageddon to The BFG‘s Deep Impact. Or the Antz to The BFG‘s A Bug’s Life. Whatever, you get it.

Bayona will direct from a script written by Trevorrow and Derek Conolly, so one hopes we’ll see more portly, useless security guards, tongue-in-cheek mass marketing, and further Primal Rage-inspired endings.

Trevorrow will also executive produce with original director Steven Spielberg. And yes, Jurassic hunk Chris Pratt and co-star Bryce Dallas Howard will somehow be brought back to the park, as well.

In related news, Jeff Goldblum was recently asked if he’d return to the series as Dr. Ian Malcolm, and his response was 100% what you’d expect from Jeff Goldblum, which is to say, incredibly unexpected:

“I’m nothing if not open. I’m like an open-faced sandwich. My door is not always open – I took the door off. I removed the hinges from the door. I’m too open. I’m like a chicken piccata. What was I about to say? Oh yes, the two [Jurassic Park] movies I did with them were plenty. If I never did anything more, I’d certainly be well satisfied.”

Interpret that as you will.
