We’ve all had that infuriating, self-doubting experience of getting completely stuck in our own head. No, not in some confusing Inception way or via some trippy Being John Malkovich doorway. It’s that circular train of thought that has you reaching near levels of panic with no escape because you’re just following the track deeper into the recesses of your brain. It’s scary and aggravating at the same time, and singer-songwriter Charlotte Carpenter captures it all with eerie perfection on her new track “Am I Alone in This?”
The rising UK musician delivers the perfect soundtrack to figuratively bashing your head against the wall. Her slide guitar sets up that creepy feeling you get when you know the thoughts you’re thinking are just useless, yet you can’t help but let them fester. Every so often, there’s a burst of emotion — rage, love, confusion, enlightenment — here represented with the sudden thundering of bluesy drumming. “I fear I’ll lose you, the way I lose my mind,” she sings, somewhat sweetly, somewhat snarling. “I fear I’ll wonder too long, I may go blind/ I wonder if you wonder the same.”
“This song is and was the beginning of a journey,” Carpenter tells Consequence of Sound of the track, “a first glimpse of a relationship where cracks and strains were beginning show. I was very much inside my own head, I was too scared to voice my worries, doubts and fears and it left me feeling lonely and isolated. I was frustrated with myself for not being brave enough to speak up.”
Take a listen to the sound of your own inner frustrations below.
