Just in time for the theatrical release of Colin Farrell’s first collaboration with Yorgos Lanthimos, The Lobster, comes news of their next film together. At the ongoing Cannes Film Festival, it was announced that Lanthimos will co-write and direct The Killing of a Sacred Deer, with Farrell in the lead role.
Per Variety, the film will be “…inspired by a Euripides tragedy, which centers on Steven, a charismatic surgeon and a teenage boy who seeks to integrate him into his broken family. When the boy’s actions become increasingly sinister, Steven’s ideal life starts to fall apart and he is forced to make an unthinkable sacrifice.” It’s perfect territory for Lanthimos, who’s made his early reputation on finding existential horror in the banal and everyday.
The film will begin shooting this summer, and A24 has already picked up the rights for domestic release. The Lobster, meanwhile, hits theaters starting this week.
