Kathleen Hanna has a strange cameo in director Rebecca Miller’s latest feature, Maggie’s Plan. She shows up at a work retreat set up by Julianne Moore’s Georgette, wailing out some tribal chants. That’s not the only singing she did for the movie, however, as her cover of the Bruce Springsteen classic “Dancing in the Dark” appears on the film’s soundtrack.
Also featuring actor Tommy Buck, the cover is a super lo-fi acoustic take, sounding more like a group of slightly tipsy friends sitting in a dimly lit apartment singing into a tape deck recorder. There are gang vocals and the clatter of background conversations, giving the song a surprising level of intimacy. Take a listen below.
